The Iranian foreign minister has called on the European Union to honor its obligations under a UN resolution that endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal and counter measures that endanger diplomacy.

Abbas Araghchi made the remarks on Thursday at a meeting in the Qatari capital of Doha with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who is also the coordinator of the Joint Commission of the Iran nuclear agreement - officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“It is expected that this body will fulfill its responsibility under the JCPOA and UN Security Council Resolution 2231 by playing a role in carrying out its duties and neutralizing moves against diplomacy,” the minister said.

Araqchi condemned the “irresponsible and unjustified actions" by three European countries, namely Britain, France, and Germany, aimed at reinstating the revoked Security Council resolutions,” describing these moves as “illegal and unjustified.”

The top Iranian diplomat also emphasized Iran’s consistent commitment to the path of diplomacy, noting that the Islamic Republic remains serious and steadfast in its position.

Kallas, for her part, said negotiations are the sole way to address the concerns of all parties and underlined the need to give diplomacy more time.

Meanwhile, the two sides discussed the latest developments related to the Iranian nuclear issue, as well as the course of Tehran’s engagement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

They further reached an understanding regarding the continuation of consultations in the coming days and weeks.

Last week, the European trio triggered the so-called snapback mechanism in Resolution 2231 to restore all UN sanctions against Iran. They gave the Security Council 30 days to decide whether it would continue sanctions relief against Iran or allow it to lapse.

Iran, Russia and China sent a letter to the UN, saying the snapback activation by the three European countries contravenes Resolution 2231 and is "legally and procedurally flawed".

They also stressed that the United States’ unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA and Europe’s failure to mitigate the consequences of Washington’s move bar any use of the snapback mechanism against Iran.

The JCPOA required Iran to scale back some of its nuclear activities in return for sanctions relief.

However, the US ditched the deal in 2018 before returning the illegal sanctions that it had lifted against Iran and launching the so-called “maximum pressure” campaign.

Following the US withdrawal, the European signatories to the JCPOA failed to uphold their commitments and made no efforts to save the agreement.
