A gunman has opened fire inside a Manhattan high-rise, killing four people, including an officer, before turning the weapon on himself.

The 27-year-old assailant, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, entered the lobby of 345 Park Avenue with an M4 rifle on Tuesday and began firing immediately, authorities said.

The shooter walked calmly through the lobby, gunned down Officer Didarul Islam of Bangladeshi descent, and continued firing, killing a woman.

He then began spraying the lobby with gunfire, killing a security guard.

Afterwards, Tamura went up to the 33rd floor, heading towards a real estate management company. There, he shot and killed another person before taking his own life.

‘Mental health’ history, no motive established yet

Authorities said Tamura acted alone and had a documented history of mental issues.

He had driven across the country in recent days, with stops traced in Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey before arriving in Manhattan.

The police recovered a rifle case, magazines, a revolver, and prescription medications from his car.

The real motive, though, remains unclear.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that Tamura had no clear ties to the targeted location, Rudin Management, raising further questions about how and why such a tragedy could unfold.

Muslim community mourns officer who ‘died a hero’

American news outlets described Islam as a 36-year-old hardworking officer, who had emigrated from Bangladesh, and served the NYPD for three and a half years.

He was a father of two, with a third child on the way.

“He made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Tisch. “He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers.”

His untimely death has been met with shock and awe among the Bangladeshi Muslim community that had nurtured him.

Mayor Eric Adams condemned the attack as “violent” and “despicable,” but offered little in the way of answers.

Critics have lambasted the drawn-out history of American gun laws allowing such attackers to legally arm themselves. They also cite Tamura’s having traveled unchecked as another indictment of the United States security procedures.
