Iranian diplomats played ‘heroic’ role alongside Armed Forces during Israeli aggression: FM

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has hailed the performance of the Iranian diplomats alongside the armed forces during the Israeli aggression against the country last month.

Speaking during a meeting attended by President Masoud Pezeshkian and the deputies and directors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, Araghchi detailed the measures taken by the diplomatic apparatus both during and after the 12-day imposed war against Iran.

“Our armed forces heroically defended the country against the enemies. Alongside that, the soldiers of the field of diplomacy were also on the scene day and night,” he said, adding that this war was a “clear example of the coordination of the field of military and diplomacy.”

On June 13, Israel launched a blatant and unprovoked aggression against Iran, assassinating many high-ranking military commanders, nuclear scientists, and ordinary civilians.

The United States also joined the war on June 22 and bombed three Iranian nuclear sites in a grave violation of the United Nations Charter, international law, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Two days later, Iran, through its successful retaliatory operations against both the Israeli regime and the US, managed to impose a halt to the illegal assault.

According to Araghchi, what forced the enemy to retreat and request a ceasefire was both the “resistance of the armed forces and the extraordinary management of the government in administering and managing the country’s affairs.”

“Our diplomats also defended the righteousness of the Iranian people and the legitimacy of self-defense against this overt act of aggression,” he said.

He added that as a result of phone calls and actions by Iranian embassies abroad, more than 120 countries in the world condemned the aggression, expressing support and solidarity with Iran.

He further noted that with the exception of the UN Security Council and IAEA Board of Governors, Iran enjoyed universal international support, citing endorsements from organizations including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Non-Aligned Movement, Persian Gulf Cooperation Council, Arab League, and African Union.

The top diplomat further noted that the Israeli aggression came while Iran was engaged in ongoing nuclear talks with the US.

“This showed who is a talker, who is a diplomat and pursues the use of diplomatic means to resolve international issues, and, on the other hand, who seeks force, bullying, and hegemony,” he emphasized.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Araghchi addressed the genocide in Gaza, saying the Foreign Ministry has conducted intensive diplomatic efforts, including his personal outreach to foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, Tunisia, Qatar, and Iraq to coordinate measures to confront what is happening in Gaza.

He emphasized that the atrocities in Gaza constitute weaponization of starvation, adding that the Israelis “are placing the people under an economic, food and medicine blockade in order to use it to gain political concessions in the ceasefire negotiations.”

Gaza’s Government Media Office announced that at least 122 Palestinians, including 83 children, have died from starvation, most of them in recent weeks.

The Israeli genocide, which began in October 2023, has so far killed more than 59,580 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
