Russian President Vladimir Putin says he held “productive” talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the Kremlin, addressing his Chinese counterpart as a “dear friend.”
At Putin's invitation, the Chinese president is in Moscow to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory Day and sign several cooperation agreements, bolstering historical ties between the two countries.
The warm words between Putin and Xi were exchanged on Thursday during a grand ceremony welcoming the Chinese leader for his 11th visit to Russia.
"Our talks with the President of the People's Republic of China took place in a traditionally warm, friendly, and constructive atmosphere and were very substantive and productive," Putin told reporters.
The Chinese head of state also hailed the relationship between the two sides, calling it “confident, stable and resilient.”
“History and reality have fully proven that the continued development and deepening of China-Russia relations is a natural continuation of the longstanding friendship between our peoples,” Xi said.
Xi described Putin as his “old friend” and vowed to work with Russia to promote a multipolar world amid rising pressure from US President Donald Trump’s trade war.
He added that China and Russia had a special responsibility to oppose unilateralism and power politics.
While praising the two sides’ cooperation during the Second World War, Xi condemned the US’s coercive behavior, saying the world is facing “unilateralism and acts of hegemonic bullying in the international arena.”
“We must learn from history … [and] resolutely oppose all forms of hegemony and power politics, and jointly create a better future for mankind.”
China, the Soviet Union, and other countries fought side by side and secured victory in the World Anti-Fascist War 80 years ago, opening a new chapter in human history.
The four-day visit has shattered Washington’s hopes of persuading Russia to decouple from China by bolstering the US-Russia relationship.
Moreover, the Chinese leader made use of the visit to express gratitude for Russia’s stance on Taiwan.
“Russia has repeatedly reiterated that it adheres to the one-China principle, that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, opposes any form of ‘Taiwan independence’, and firmly supports all measures taken by the Chinese government and people to achieve national reunification.”
