Syria bloodshed

The crackdown by the forces loyal to Syria’s ruling Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, continues to claim more lives among the country’s Alawite minority with 830 civilians reportedly being killed since Thursday. HTS-led forces are now targeting minorities in a village and city near the coastal city of Latakia. Reports say that over 10 massacres of civilians, including women and children, have taken place in the suburbs of Latakia, Tartus, Hama, and Homs. Images of dead bodies on the ground have also come out of the coastal city of Baniyas. The massacres of the Alawite and Christian minorities in Syria follows a new wave of protests in Latakia and several other coastal cities against HTS forces and their self-proclaimed leader, Abu Mohammad al-Jolani. These killings have drawn widespread condemnations both domestically and internationally.

US Iran sanctions

The United States has declined to renew a sanctions waiver that allowed Iraq to import electricity from Iran. According to the US embassy in Baghdad, March 8 marks the beginning of Iraq's prohibition on importing electricity from Iran. It said this initiative is part of a broader effort to neutralize Iran's nuclear capabilities and limit its ballistic missile advancements. It said the United States will not allow Iran any economic or financial relief. The sanctions waiver was originally implemented in 2018 when Washington reintroduced sanctions on Tehran after President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran during his first term. Since taking office again in January, Trump has revived his so-called "maximum pressure" strategy against Iran.

Israel Gaza aid block

The Israeli military has once again violated the Gaza ceasefire, killing two Palestinians in an attack on the eastern Gaza neighborhood of Shuja’iyah. The attacks also left a number of others injured. Israel has refused to halt deadly strikes on Gaza since its truce with Hamas took effect on January 19. The regime has killed at least 8 Palestinians in the territory in the past three days. These have raised the total fatalities in the regime’s genocide since October 2023 to over 48,450. The humanitarian situation is also deteriorating eight days after Israel blocked aid deliveries into the Strip again. As a result, at least six bakeries have closed in Khan Yunis and officials are warning that all bakeries may close in two weeks due to lack of fuel.
