US President Donald Trump has ignited a firestorm of controversy even among his own hardline fanatics after sharing an AI-generated video portraying a so-called vision for the Gaza Strip’s future.
The video, posted on Trump’s Truth Social social media platform on Tuesday, depicted purported transformation of the war-torn coastal sliver into, what was condemned as, a decadent and shameless scene, featuring luxury resorts, limousines, and super yachts among other things.
The clip also featured a towering golden statue of Trump, and his ally Elon Musk tossing dollar bills at cheering tourists.
It concluded with an unsettling scene of Trump and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been waging a war of genocide against Gaza with Washington’s support that has so far claimed the lives of more than 48,300 Palestinians, mostly women and children, sunbathing, while sipping cocktails half-dressed beside a swimming pool.
The video followed Trump’s remarks in early February, in which he said the United States sought to "take over" Gaza and expel its Palestinian population to allegedly turn the devastated territory into the "Riviera” of the West Asia region.
The proposal has invited an incessant torrent of condemnation worldwide as an open endorsement of ethnic cleansing.
‘Sick, celebrating murder of 1000s of children, women’
While Trump has long enjoyed unwavering support on Truth Social, which is thronged by his die-hard supporters, the reaction to the post was overwhelmingly negative, with thousands of users urging him to delete it within hours.
Many pro-Trump followers voiced shock and outrage, criticizing the video as tone-deaf and morally repugnant.
"What sort of sick ad is this?!" one user asked. "I have been behind you, Trump, but this golden…statue of you, standing in a metropolis built on the graves of tens of thousands of murdered children and women, is SICK."
Another user implored Trump to take down the post and apologize, writing, "Posting this demeans you as a human being, as the President of our country, and all of us, the American people,” and adding that the video also “humiliates and degrades all the peoples” of the West Asia region. “It’s shameful and depraved."
Self-proclaimed “religious” Trump supporters also expressed alarm, with one commenting, "How horrible! The golden statue is frightening. Reminds me of ‘the Antichrist…’”
Others criticized the contradiction between Trump’s "America First" rhetoric and his push for another bout of heavy and disastrous meddling in the West Asia region.
"I get that you're trolling, but please stop” with this nonsense “and focus on the ‘America First’ agenda you campaigned on. No one voted to make Gaza great again," a supporter wrote.
Trump has yet to respond to the backlash, but the controversy has further intensified global concerns over the US’s intentions in Gaza.
Observers say, with the region still grappling with heavily-US-backed Israeli massacres and facing humanitarian catastrophes, Trump’s AI-generated fantasy has only deepened fears of further American and American-backed foreign exploitation under the guise of “reconstruction.”
