US halts funding for Palestinian Authority security forces

US and Palestinian officials say the administration of US President Donald Trump has entirely cut off funding for the security forces of the Palestinian Authority.

The Washington Post quoting sources reported on Wednesday that the halt was part of a broader freeze on foreign aid.

Brig. Gen. Anwar Rajab, spokesman for the Palestinian Authority security forces, said the US was a key donor supporting security training programs.

However, some programs have already been canceled and a planned meeting with US officials about security operations in Jenin has been postponed.

Israel has also been withholding customs duties collected on behalf of the Palestinian government for months.

The Authority, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, has been unable to pay the salaries of public employees in full since November 2021.

The security forces are widely unpopular amongst Palestinians for their collaboration with Israeli forces in targeting Palestinian groups resisting the occupation.

The Israeli military reportedly expressed satisfaction with a recent operation conducted by the security forces in the Jenin refugee camp.

Since December 2024, operations by the security forces have involved approximately 300 armed personnel targeted resistance groups. The raids are carried out in collaboration with Israel and under the oversight of the regime.

Israel's so-called central command has recommended strengthening the security apparatus of the Authority and increasing coordination with the group.

Tensions have been running high across the occupied West Bank, where more than 900 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 7,000 others injured in attacks by the Israeli military and settlers since October 7, 2023.
