Demonstrators chant 'No Kings, No Tyrants, No Messing Around'

People take part in the "No Kings Day" protest on Presidents Day in Washington, in support of federal workers and against recent actions by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, on February 17, 2025 (AP)

On President's Day, a national holiday, protests were held across all 50 states against the flurry of controversial executive orders and policies of second term of President Donald Trump.

However, Trump's approval rating effectively stands at 52%, which is almost 20 points above his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Protesters say that although they are in the Democratic minority now, they hope that will soon change.

There is a lot of criticism of people that are fighting against this. ... the President is firing people that oppose him.

So it seems like a steep hill to climb, and things take time, but I do hope that there are more court cases and more judges that block the things that President Trump is doing.

Many say that misplaced priorities, identity politics, and an inability to root out corruption, have caused many independent voters to lend Trump their support.

The Democratic Party has its worst approval ratings since at least the 1980s.

I wish I could explain it. It's pretty disappointing. It's really disgusting.

And hopefully, you know, I'm hoping that within the next few months, those numbers are going to drop once they see the effects that his policies have on the day to day American people.

Google Trends and WikiLeaks have reported that Washington DC area internet searches have exploded for terms like criminal defense lawyer, racketeering laws, Swiss bank, offshore bank, wire money, wipe hard drive, and, statute of limitations.

I'm sure you know that there are stuff that's corrupt and there's stuff that is not very efficient, but just going in there and just smashing everything and throwing everything all out, just like they, you know, they fired all the employees that watched over the nuclear stockpile, is not a good thing.

Protester 03

Perhaps most controversial is Trump's plan to fire 200,000 civil servants.

However, a refusal to provide public services isn't new in American liberal democracy.

From 1992 until the year 2000, former US president Bill Clinton, a democrat, orchestrated 400,000 job cuts to the federal workforce.

Those were the largest such cuts since World War II and reduced the size of the federal workforce to its lowest level since 1960.
