Benjamin Netanyahu says he is “committed” to US President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to take over the Gaza Strip and displace its Palestinian residents.

In a statement released on Monday, the Israeli prime minister said he was “committed to US President Trump’s plan for the creation of a different Gaza.”

He also claimed that “neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority” would be ruling the besieged Palestinian territory following the war.

Netanyahu has said he spoke with the visiting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio about “Trump’s bold vision for Gaza’s future” and about ways to “ensure that vision becomes a reality.”

Rubio was in Saudi Arabia to push the scheme, which has been rejected by Arab states. Rubio traveled to Riyadh from the occupied Palestinian territories, where he kicked off his first West Asia trip.

The United States, Israel’s top ally and weapons supplier, says it is open to alternative proposals from Arab governments, but Rubio said for now, “the only plan is the Trump plan.”

The Trump administration has warned of repercussions for Egypt and Jordan if they do not allow in the more than two million Palestinians in Gaza.

Following Rubio’s meeting with Netanyahu on February 16, the Israeli prime minister touted a “common strategy” between the two allies concerning Gaza.

Trump sparked a global outcry with his proposal, citing Egypt or Jordan as possible destinations.

Netanyahu has suggested Saudi Arabia could also host Palestinians.

That statement was the spark that set off anger from the Arab world.

Saudi Arabia says it will host an Arab summit on Trump’s Gaza plan. The leaders of Egypt, Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates will attend the summit, which will take place ahead of an Arab League meeting in Cairo on February 27 on the same issue.

An extraordinary meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers will be held in the coming weeks at Iran’s request, too.

Legal experts say the vicious Trump scheme would violate international law, and amounts to ethnic cleansing.
