US federal agencies have laid off a considerably large number of employees as part of a plan by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to radically cut back the US bureaucracy spread.
Some of the agencies include the Department of Education, the Small Business Administration, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the General Services Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Forest Service.
The Forest Service will lay off 3,400 employees, although firefighters are said to be exempted.
The Department of Veterans Affairs will also be firing 1,000 workers in the hopes to save $98 million in annual spending.
Most of those fired were in their probationary period, meaning that they are much easier to fire compared to other workers.
Around 280,000 workers have been hired by the US government in the past two years. These workers are most likely to be laid off under the Trump administration.
After taking office in January, Trump selected campaign sponsor Elon Musk as head of the unofficial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), with the aim of cutting unnecessary spending and decreasing government bureaucracy.
One controversial government reform program attempted by DOGE was the freezing of all USAID programs, which began on January 20.
The purge has set off chaos and anger across the US, with many of the laid off workers suing the federal government, arguing that they were unjustly fired.
Many have also criticized Musk’s role in the new government, as well as his unofficial DOGE organization.
Critics claim that Musk gained his new position due to his sponsorship of Trump’s election campaign.
They have also criticized the fact Musk gained his position without being elected or vetted by an elected body.
