A bombing attack on a government building in the Afghan capital of Kabul has left one person dead and three others injured, the second such incident in a week.

The explosion targeted the Taliban-ruled Afghan ministry of urban development and housing in Kabul on Thursday, a Taliban government spokesman said, adding that the bomber was shot before entering the official building.

"The suicide attacker wanted to enter the ministry and one of the mujahideen (security forces) shot him and then in the result of the explosion another person near him was killed and three injured," interior ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani told AFP.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the deadly attack.

The Daesh terrorist group claimed responsibility for the bombing attack that killed at least five people and wounded seven others in the country’s northern province of Kunduz on Tuesday.

The blast occurred near the Kabul Bank branch in the northern province, killing the bank's security guard and four others, including civilians and members of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban group.

The terrorist group previously claimed responsibility for a similar bombing in March 2024, outside a bank in the southern city of Kandahar -- considered the spiritual heartland of the Taliban.

In December last year, Daesh also claimed responsibility for a bombing which killed the Taliban-ruled government's minister for refugees, Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, in the capital Kabul.

Daesh has a foothold in eastern and northern Afghanistan, particularly in Nangarhar, which is regarded as its base in the war-torn country. It has in recent years claimed responsibility for several deadly attacks across Afghanistan and the region despite claims by Taliban authorities that they have mostly crushed the since returning to power in 2021.

Regional countries have held the United States and Britain responsible for the growth of the Daesh terrorist group in Afghanistan and the uptick in violence across the Asian country after the US abruptly withdrew its occupation forces from the country.
