White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has revealed that during the first week of Donald Trump's presidency, 538 illegal migrants have been detained while hundreds more have been deported.
Leavitt said the deportations were part of "The largest deportation operation in history".
She claimed that the arrested individuals include members of armed gangs.
One of Donald Trump's main campaign promises during the 2024 presidential election was curbing illegal immigration into America.
According to a US House report, during the four years of the Biden administration more than 8 million illegal migrants have entered the United States, with 6.7 million entering through the southern border.
Although Trump's rhetoric against immigration mainly focused on illegal immigrants, on the second day of his administration he signed an executive order to deport legal immigrant students who show sympathy for Israel's enemies.
Commentators believe that this order contradicts Trump's earlier pledge to protect freedom of speech in the United States.
Another controversy arose after Elon Musk, one of Trump's main election backers, announced his desire for increased immigration of skilled workers to the United States through the H-1B visa program.
Many of Trump's supporters have deemed this move to be a betrayal of his election promises. These critics believe that the influx of these skilled workers will hurt American workers for the benefit of mega-corporations such as those belonging to Musk.
Within hours of taking office, President Trump signed several executive actions with impacts both domestically and internationally.
By Wednesday, incoming refugee flights were canceled, troops were deployed to the southern border, and federal authorities were authorized to arrest individuals in or near schools and churches.
The fast-track deportation procedure, known as “expedited removal,” allows immigration authorities to deport individuals without a hearing before an immigration judge.
