Iran seeks South Korea’s assistance for AI, fiber-optic projects

Iran’s telecoms minister says South Korea can help Iran accelerate its AI and fiber-optic projects.

Iran is seeking South Korea’s assistance for expanding its artificial intelligence and fiber-optic projects as the two countries pledge to increase their cooperation in the field of information and communication technology.

In a meeting with South Korea’s ambassador to Tehran, telecoms minister Sattar Hashemi said Iran and South Korea can launch joint AI projects amid the growing popularity of the technology in the world.

Hashemi said Tehran is also inclined to use South Korea’s experience in the expansion of fiber-optic networks to help boost internet speed for fixed users in Iran.

He also urged the government in Seoul to use its influence over the South Korea-based mobile phone manufacturer Samsung to enable fifth-generation (5G) internet connectivity for Iranians using Samsung phones produced before 2025.

Iran’s telecoms regulator said in late December that Samsung had agreed to activate software requirements for accessing 5G services on phones supplied to Iran in 2025.

The company has also promised to fix similar issues for older models of its phones that are equipped with 5G but do not work inside Iran, the regulator said.

Iranian mobile phone operators have launched dozens of 5G masts in major cities across the country as they seek to expand access to high-speed networks and increase their revenues.

South Korean envoy to Iran Kim Junpyo said in the meeting with Hashemi that his country is investing heavily in the expansion of AI and eyes to become one of the three AI powerhouses in the world.

Junpyo said Seoul would help Iran boost its AI infrastructure by transferring technology and equipment needed for the implementation of AI projects in the country.
