The South Korean military says North Korea has launched several short-range missiles off its east coast.
"The South Korean military detected several short-range ballistic missiles fired into the East Sea," the military said on Tuesday, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.
The type and capabilities of the latest missiles launched by the North remain unclear as Seoul shared no extra details about the firing.
A new intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile was test-fired successfully by Pyongyang last week.
The US, Japan and South Korea are closely monitoring the situation as it could affect future relations and security policies in the region.
In the meantime, the North's military’s frequent missile launches add to concerns about regional security as Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya visits South Korea for a series of meetings with top officials amid escalated tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
US' regional allies are reportedly exploring new channels to boost diplomatic and military ties with the incoming administration of US president-elect Donald Trump, who returns to office next week.
Trump, who had several unprecedented rounds with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his first term in office, has underscored the personal rapport with Kim.
The timing of North Korea's latest launches is seen as significant, occurring in the context of Pyongyang's ongoing military development alongside its international efforts in diplomatic relations.
