Expert says TikTok paying a price for not being pro-Israel

An internet expert says TikTok is being stigmatized in the US for failing to support Israel’s genocidal wars.

Social media platform TikTok is paying a price in the United States, where it has a huge follower base, because it has failed to follow the policies of the US government on Israel’s ongoing wars, an internet expert has said.

Hossein Delirian, who also serves as the spokesman of Iran’s National Virtual Space Center, said on Saturday that TikTok has been swimming against the tide in the US by allowing posts and trends that have supported Palestine against an Israeli war on Gaza that started in October 2023.

Delirian said the issue has definitely been a reason why the US establishment has been seeking to outlaw the platform as part of an ongoing court proceeding.

He said that, unlike other major social media platforms, posts supporting Palestine on TikTok have significantly outnumbered those supporting Israel, adding that pro-Palestine posts have also attracted more likes and views.

“This means that TikTok has changed the media narrative in a way that harms America’s interests,” said the expert, adding that US authorities are specifically concerned about the spread of anti-Israeli sentiments among the Gen Z users of the platform and are trying to outlaw it over accusations that it may be used by the Chinese government for espionage.

The analyst said that TikTok’s popular approach toward the war on Gaza has been in contrast with other platforms that have supported Israel and have even used their artificial intelligence (AI) tools to censor pro-Palestine posts or remove those criticizing Israel.

Delirian also referred to a recent report by the Washington Post which indicated that Israel has been using AI tools to target and kill people in Gaza by analyzing their use of social media channels and groups supporting Palestine and its resistance groups.
