Israeli forces say they have arrested a settler from the occupied city of al-Quds on charges of espionage for Iran and being involved in a plot to carry out an attack in the occupied territories.
In a joint statement on Tuesday, the Shin Bet and police said the 23-year-old Israeli settler was arrested in November on suspicion of being in contact with Iranian intelligence forces to commit "security offenses" in return for payment.
The Israeli settler, who was activated by an Iranian agent known as “John” in October, is accused of proposing cutting off the power to the light rail system in al-Quds and sending a video to his Iranian operator in an attempt to locate the power supply, the statement said.
The suspect is also accused of searching social networks to purchase a gun, a silencer and materials to produce explosives for the purpose of carrying out an attack in the occupied territories, it added.
The Israeli settler had been detained and an indictment was expected in coming days, according to the statement.
The latest development comes a week after Israeli authorities said they had detained nearly 30 people, most of them Israeli settlers, on charges of spying for Iran.
According to a report by Reuters, the Israeli settlers allegedly spied for Iran in nine covert cells in what four Israeli sources said was Tehran’s biggest effort in decades to infiltrate its arch foe.
The Israeli settlers’ roles in alleged espionage was gathering information on military defenses as well as planning sabotage within the occupied territories.
Back in October, Israeli prosecutors said authorities had arrested seven Jewish settlers from the northern part of the occupied territories on charges of carrying out tasks for Iran and gathering information on the regime’s strategic installations.
