An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale has shaken Iran's southwestern province of Khuzestan.
The tremor hit the cities of Masjed Soleyman and Qaleh Tall as well as Haftkel District in Khuzestan at 07:33 a.m. local time (0403 GMT) on Thursday, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The quake and its aftershocks were felt in the nearby provincial capital city of of Ahvaz and the nearby city of Shahr-e Kord, the provincial capital of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province.
The governor of Masjed Soleyman said at least 29 people sustained injuries as a result of the termer and 33 houses were partially damaged, with local media reporting power outage at the city.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences also recorded the quake but placed its magnitude at 5.7.
Covering an area of 63,238 square kilometers, Khuzestan Province borders Iraq and the Persian Gulf with an estimated population of 4.7 million people.
Iran sits astride the boundaries of several major tectonic plates and is beset by frequent seismic activity.
The country's deadliest recorded quake was a 7.4-magnitude tremor in June 1990 that killed 40,000 people in the cities of Rudbar and Manjil in Gilan Province, injured 300,000, and left half a million homeless.
