Dozens of Syrian army cadets and military personnel have been rescued after government forces, backed by Russian fighter jets, carried out a joint counter-terrorism operation and broke their siege near the country’s northwestern city of Aleppo.
The Syrian military announced in a statement on Wednesday that cadets and officers from Assad Military Engineering Academy, located 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) southwest of the center of Aleppo, heroically fought off foreign-backed terrorists led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Shams (HTS) Takfiri group ever since it entered the city.
The statement added that the Syrian army forces bravely and courageously confronted vicious attacks by the terrorists, as the latter stormed the academy using various types of medium and heavy weapons as well as advanced drones.

The government forces then redeployed to al-Waha area in al-Safira city.
They were subsequently besieged by Takfiri militants from different directions, who intensely struck their position with tank and artillery shells, machine guns as well as drones.
Dozens of soldiers were killed or wounded in fierce battles with the terrorists. The remaining Syrian army cadets and military personnel were ultimately rescued following a joint Syrian-Russian operation.
They were transported to the western city of Homs to receive medical treatment and recuperate.
Takfiri terrorists carried out a surprise assault in the Aleppo and Idlib countryside last week, and overran a number of villages and towns before entering Aleppo on November 27.
Syria has been gripped by foreign-sponsored militancy since March 2011. Damascus slams the Western states and their regional allies for aiding terrorist groups to wreak havoc in the Arab country.
Terror outfits are seeking to hinder the Syrian government’s efforts aimed at consolidating security and stability in the country, which is also under the Israeli regime's regular aggression.
Israel has been the principal supporter of terrorist groups that oppose the democratically-elected government of President Bashar al-Assad since the foreign-backed militancy erupted in Syria.
