Iran FM urges Sweden to protect diplomatic missions, staffers after embassy attack

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has called on Sweden to protect diplomatic missions and staffers following an attack on an employee of the Islamic Republic’s embassy in Stockholm.

In a telephone conversation with Mohammad Ahmadi, the temporary charge d'affaires of the Iranian embassy, Amir-Abdollahian assessed the situation after a group of anti-Iran elements illegally gathered outside the mission and assaulted an employee.

The top Iranian diplomat urged the Swedish government to adhere to its obligations stipulated in the Vienna Convention concerning the protection of diplomatic missions and staffers.

He also spoke to the embassy employee who was attacked and wished him a swift recovery.

Ahmadi said, “Soon after the unlawful act [outside the embassy], a strong complaint in Tehran and Stockholm was transferred to the Swedish side, stressing the need for identifying and punishing the perpetrators” of the attack.

In meetings and phone calls, Swedish officials have apologized for the incident and emphasized Sweden's commitment to maintaining and ensuring the security of the embassy and its staffers under the Vienna Convention, he added.

“In this regard, five assailants were arrested with the cooperation of the Swedish police. The issue will be followed up until the perpetrators of the attack are convicted."
