Israeli forces on Monday shot dead a young Palestinian man in the central part of the occupied West Bank, only a few hours after they raided the city of Jenin and carried out airstrikes that killed at least five people and wounded 40 others.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced in a statement that Israeli soldiers killed 21-year-old Mohammad Emad Hassanein at the entrance to al-Bireh city, located 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) north of al-Quds, early on Monday after shooting him with a live round in the head.

According to the International Middle East Media Center, the Palestinian was marching with many young men, protesting against Israeli repressive measures and incursions into the occupied West Bank’s Jenin refugee camp, when Israeli soldiers attacked them with a barrage of live rounds, rubber-coated steel bullets, and gas bombs.

The sources added that Hassanein, who was born in the Gaza Strip but was living with his family in Ramallah, was a former political prisoner. He was recovering from gunshot wounds he suffered as Israeli soldiers abducted him on May 15, 2019.

At the time, the soldiers shot him in the right leg, causing serious muscle and nerve damage. He had since been receiving treatment to regain the full function of his leg.

Early on Monday, the Israeli military carried out an attack in Jenin, sending smoke billowing from the wreckage of buildings. Locals reported spotting a convoy of Israeli armored vehicles moving towards the city’s vast refugee camp.

According to the residents, Israel launched at least 10 air attacks on Jenin.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health said the raids killed at least four people and wounded 27, several of whom were in critical condition.

“What is going on in the refugee camp is a real war,” Palestinian ambulance driver Khaled al-Ahmad told Reuters news agency.

“There were strikes from the sky targeting the camp, every time we drive in around five to seven ambulances and we come back full with injured people,” he added.

On June 19, Israeli soldiers stormed Jenin and fired live ammunition, stun grenades, and toxic gas. At least seven Palestinians, including one minor, were killed and more than 90 people suffered injuries.

Combat helicopters were used for the first time in decades after the ensuing hours-long exchange of gunfire between Palestinian resistance fighters and Israeli army soldiers.

The Israeli military said in a statement that the raid was to arrest two suspects and that its soldiers came under fire, which resulted in a “massive exchange of fire.”

It confirmed seven of its soldiers were wounded during the attack.

Since the start of 2023, Israeli forces have killed more than 190 Palestinians, including 26 children, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The death toll includes 36 Palestinians, who lost their lives during a four-day Israeli army onslaught on the besieged Gaza Strip between May 9 and 13.
