Saudi war on Yemen

Iran's foreign minister has reiterated the need for finding a peaceful solution to the Yemen crisis by promoting inter-Yemeni talks. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the remark in a meeting with Mohammed Abdulsalam, the chief negotiator of Yemen’s National Salvation Government, in the Omani capital of Muscat. He criticized the total air and sea blockade imposed on Yemen by the Saudi-led military coalition. Amir-Abdollahian said the blockade must be lifted in a humanitarian move so that Yemeni people could live under normal conditions. Lauding the Yemeni people’s steadfastness in realizing their rights, Iran's top diplomat said the Islamic Republic will continue to support them. The Saudi-led war on Yemen has so far killed hundreds of thousands of Yemeni people. The UN says more than 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid. The world body has described the situation in Yemen as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Russia-Ukraine war

Russia's foreign minister says he is convinced that Moscow will achieve its goals in the Ukraine war thanks to its patience and perseverance. Sergei Lavrov reiterated his country’s position that before any talks with Ukraine, Kiev must recognize the annexation of four Ukrainian regions by Russia. He emphasized that the de-Nazification of all those regions is an absolute priority for Moscow. Lavrov also confirmed that gaining total control of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions in the east and south of Ukraine is an ultimate goal for Russia. He accused the West of preparing and unleashing the war against his country, saying Moscow would like to end this war as soon as possible.

Peru political crisis

Peru’s former president, Pedro Castillo, who is now in jail over attempting to dissolve Congress, says he is a victim of political revenge by his adversaries. He made the remark while speaking at a hearing to appeal his 18 months of pre-trial detention. Castillo said he had not committed the crimes of rebellion and conspiracy for which he is under investigation. He described his pre-trial detention as an unjust move that has only served to polarize the country. Castillo was detained on December 7 after attempting to close down the legislature and rule by decree to avoid an impeachment trial. The vote, however, went ahead and Castillo was ousted and promptly arrested. Dina Boluarte, his vice president, was sworn in as the new president the same day. Castillo's ouster sparked protests throughout Peru, which have left at least 22 people dead so far.
