Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres says the world body is committed to preserving and protecting the rights of the victims and survivors of various acts of terrorism in the country, pledging to further support attempts aimed at justice-seeking for them.
Guterres made the remarks in a message read out by the director of the United Nations Information Center in Tehran, Inger Marie Vennize, as she took part in a conference in the Iranian capital on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism.
The event was held in coordination with the Association for Defending Victims of Terrorism, the Human Rights Committee of the Iranian Parliament as well as the UN Information Center in Tehran.
Guterres stated that the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism is a day of reflection, recognition, and action.
“We reflect on the pain and suffering of those who lost loved ones. We commit to support survivors scarred by heinous acts of terrorism by amplifying their voices, protecting their rights, and seeking justice,” the message also read.
The UN chief went on to say that he looks forward to learning and hearing directly from survivors about their needs and challenges at the Global Congress of Victims of Terrorism next month.
The chairwoman of the Human Rights Committee at the Iranian parliament Zohreh Elahian, for her part, called on parliamentary friendship groups worldwide to work together to pass a comprehensive act, in collaboration with non-governmental organizations, to support victims of terrorism in their respective countries.
Also in the conference, family members of Iranian victims of terrorism delivered speeches on how their loved ones were murdered by terrorists. They also called on national and international authorities to combat terrorism.
