Chinese President Xi Jinping warns that the Ukraine crisis could result in a bigger and more lasting threat to global peace, as the war grinds through its third month.

In a phone conversation with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, Xi said the resulting confrontation could become a bigger and more lasting threat to global peace than the current war in Ukraine.

For the second time in two days, Xi reiterated that Europeans needed to take their own security issues “in their own hands.”

According to a Chinese government account, Xi and Macron agreed that “all parties concerned should support Russia and Ukraine to restore peace through negotiation.”

They also agreed on the need to reach a speedy ceasefire in Ukraine, according to readouts from both Beijing and Paris.

“The two heads of state reiterated their commitment to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” according to the French readout.

The Elysee presidential office also said that Xi and Macron had both “reiterated their commitment to respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, and agreed on the urgency of reaching a ceasefire.”

But there were no clues in either version as to how such a ceasefire would be achieved in reality.

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine in late February.

Western countries have responded to the Russian military campaign by backing Ukraine with cash and increasingly heavy weaponry while imposing sanctions against Moscow.
