Resisting US sanctions
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution says Iran will not budge over its regional presence or its nuclear progress vis-à-vis the United States or any other power, simply to protect itself against sanctions. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said it would be a grave mistake for Iran to back down on its stance, and would hurt its political power. According to the Leader, the propositions that Iran needs to reduce its defense power so as not to provoke the enemies, are extremely naïve and amateurish. He said such ideas have been raised in the past, but turned down every time. Ayatollah Khamenei noted that Iran would be facing grave threats today if those proposals had been enacted. He said regional presence is what gives Iran strategic depth and more power. Similarly, the leader said, Iran has no reason to give up on its advancements in nuclear technology, because that would make the country dependent on others when the need arises in the near future. The Leader was addressing members of the Assembly of Experts.
Russia-Ukraine conflict
The besieged city of Mariupol is at the center of news on the 15th day of the Russian offensive in Ukraine. Latest reports suggest Russia is now in control of some parts of the strategic port city. The news comes right on the heels of a controversy over the bombing of a hospital there. Kiev and Moscow are giving conflicting accounts about the strike. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says the hospital had been serving as a military base for Ukrainian nationalists. He says radical groups had driven out the patients and staff and turned the hospital into a base. Ukraine earlier claimed the target was a working maternity hospital, with women in labor injured in the Russian attack. In another development, Ukraine says it is opening seven humanitarian corridors for civilian evacuations, including in Mariupol.
Ukraine refugees
The United Nations says more than 2.3 million people have fled Ukraine since the start of the Russian military campaign two weeks ago.
