Iran have sealed the first AFC ticket to the World Cup 2022 with a 1-0 win over Iraq in Group A of the Asian qualifiers.
Team Melli were dominant in the first half and created several chances in front of more than 10,000 fans at Azadi Stadium, but the Iraqi keeper Fahad Talib capped off an electrifying 45 minutes to keep his side in the game.
The deadlock was finally broken just two minutes after the break, when Alireza Jahanbakhsh split the opponents’ defense with a low through-ball, providing Mehdi Taremi a clear path on goal and the Porto striker slotted the ball past Talib, to take the win and the World Cup qualification for the Cheetahs with three games to spare.
This will be Iran’s 6th participation in the sport’s show-piece event.
