'Foreign presence increases insecurity'

The Iranian president expresses concern over the presence of foreigners in West Asia, warning that it increases insecurity in the region. Ebrahim Raeisi stressed the importance of cooperation among the regional countries for ensuring peace and security. He noted that the cooperation is also beneficial for the progress of the regional nations. Raeisi made the remarks in a meeting with the Qatari foreign minister in Tehran. Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani also echoed the Iranian president’s stance on regional cooperation, noting that the presence of foreign forces will have adverse consequences for the region. The Qatari official is on an official visit to Iran for a series of high-level meetings on regional issues. He met with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian earlier on Thursday. 

Tensions over Ukraine

The Kremlin is displeased with the US response to its security concerns. Russia’s top diplomat says Washington has NOT addressed Moscow’s main security concerns over Ukraine joining NATO. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says it will now be up to President Vladimir Putin to decide on Russia’s next steps.  Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also says remarks out of the US and NATO about Russia’s main demand being unacceptable do not leave a lot of room for optimism. The US has given a formal response to Russia’s security terms to resolve the Ukraine crisis. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the response offers a diplomatic path as well as Washington’s proposals to defuse tensions.

France's nationwide strike

Thousands of French workers go on strike, demanding a salary rise amid a hike in the cost of living. Workers from heavy industries, transport, farming and public services as well as teachers are taking part in the strikes. France's major labor union, CGT says over 170 demonstrations and marches have been held across the country. The industrial action has also disrupted regional train services in the capital, Paris. France experienced an inflation rate of 2.8 percent over the course of 2021. The country’s worker unions criticize the government for failing to introduce a boost to the minimum wage over the past year.
