Yemen fighting

The Yemeni army has made further advances in Ma’rib province, taking control of a military camp near the provincial capital. Yemeni forces captured the Um Reesh camp after fierce clashes with Saudi-backed militants. The camp is located in the Juba district, south of Ma'rib province. The Yemeni army also gained control over the Jarsha district. These are the latest in a series of gains the Yemeni army has made in recent days. Since last year, Ma'rib has turned into a focus of the Yemeni army operations. It is the last stronghold of the Saudi militants.

Mali anti-French sentiment

Anti-French sentiment is running high in Mali where thousands have come out to protest foreign military presence in the West African country. The demonstrators have flooded the streets of the capital Bamako, waving national flags and chanting slogans against France. Some of them have set fire to the French flag. They are angry with French interference in Mali’s political affairs. They also want a total withdrawal of French troops from their country.

Canada indigenous rights

The Canadian government has appealed a court ruling on individual welfare compensation to indigenous children. Ottawa says it is instead working to strike a deal with the indigenous groups by the end of the year. The government says it is putting the appeal on hold to start two months of talks from next week to negotiate a deal. Indigenous communities stressed that they would not leave out the issue of children’s legal liabilities in the negotiations. The initial ruling required the Canadian government to pay billions of dollars to more than 55,000 indigenous children. Ottawa appealed the ruling on Friday, after a series of victories for indigenous people in years-long legal battles. Indigenous Canadian communities are still reeling from recent discoveries of hundreds of unmarked graves of children at residential schools.
