Iran envoy: UN Security Council must force Israel to end aggression against Syria

Iran’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations has called on the Security Council to force the Israeli regime to put an immediate end to its acts of aggression against Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Majid Takht-Ravanchi made the remarks on Tuesday during a Security Council meeting on the most recent political and security developments in Syria.

“The Security Council must act responsibly and force the Israeli regime to immediately end its violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria,” Takht-Ravanchi told the 15-member body.

“Such acts of adventurism, which we strongly condemn, are a blatant breach of international law and a threat to regional and international peace and security.”

Israel frequently launches missile attacks and targets military positions inside Syria, especially those of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah which has played a key role in helping the Syrian army in its fight against the foreign-backed terrorists.

Israel has been a main supporter of terrorist groups that have opposed the government of President Bashar al-Assad since foreign-backed militancy erupted in Syria ten years ago.

The Syrian government says the Israeli regime and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri terrorist groups that are wreaking havoc in the country.

Israel has also occupied large swathes of land known as the Golan Heights in southwestern Syria since 1967, maintaining a significant military presence in the Arab country’s territory. Syria has repeatedly reaffirmed its sovereignty over Golan, saying the territory must be completely restored to its control.

Syria’s UN ambassador denounces Israeli aerial assaults on Syrian territories as a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions that urge respect for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

'Uninvited foreign forces must immediately leave'

The senior Iranian diplomat also called for an end to the occupation of parts of Syria and said, “The entire uninvited foreign forces must leave the country without any precondition or further delay.”

Takht-Ravanchi underlined that the Syrian crisis must be resolved peacefully and in accordance with the principles of international law, and with respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country as well as non-interference in its internal or external affairs.

“We reject separatist activities or illegitimate initiatives of self-rule in Syria and condemn any attempt to support them. The sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Syria must be fully respected by all,” Iran’s permanent ambassador to the UN said.

The US military has stationed forces and equipment in eastern and northeastern Syria, with the Pentagon claiming that the deployment is aimed at preventing the oilfields in the area from falling into the hands of Daesh terrorists.

Damascus, however, says the unlawful deployment is meant to plunder the country’s resources.

The Syrian foreign minister says his country will continue the fight against terrorism, calling on the US and Turkey to pull out their forces from the northern part of the country.

Former US president Donald Trump admitted on several occasions that American forces were in Syria for its oil.

After failing to oust the Syrian government through proxies and direct involvement in the conflict, the US government has now stepped up its economic war on the Arab country.

This comes as Turkey has also deployed forces in Syria in violation of the Arab country's territorial integrity.

Ankara-backed militants were deployed to northeastern Syria in October 2019 after Turkish military forces launched a long-threatened cross-border invasion in a declared attempt to push fighters of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) away from border areas.

Ankara views the US-backed YPG as a terrorist organization tied to the homegrown Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been seeking an autonomous Kurdish region in Turkey since 1984.

The Kurdish-led administration in northeastern Syria says the Turkish offensive has killed hundreds of civilians, including dozens of children since it started.

Both the US and Turkish forces are deployed in Syria without any authorization from the government in Damascus or the UN.
