Call for Gitmo closure
Dozens of Democrats in the US House of Representatives call on the president to immediately close the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba. 75 lawmakers said the prison’s continued operation is a stain on the country's reputation. They stressed that the facility undermines US ability to advocate for human rights and the rule of law. The notorious prison was opened under Republican President George W. Bush after the September 11 attacks, some 20 years ago. Since then, most of the prisoners have been held without being charged or tried. In 2015, Congress passed laws barring transfers of Guantanamo inmates to prisons on the US mainland. The Central Intelligence Agency has been accused of subjecting the detainees to an assortment of torture, including sleep deprivation, beatings, water boarding and so on.
Greece wildfires
Wildfires rage across Greece for the third day, forcing the evacuation of people from dozens of towns and villages. Over 150 wildfires have erupted in Greece since Tuesday as the country grapples with its worst heat wave in more than 30 years. The blazes have destroyed houses and burnt thousands of hectares of forests. Also, smoke from the fire filled the capital Athens and prompted evacuations. Authorities have warned of more blazes in the coming days. Greek fire authorities have mobilized ground and air forces to tackle the inferno. Experts have blamed climate change for the increase in both frequency and intensity of wildfires.
