US CDC recommends indoor mask use for vaccinated people

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has demanded the vaccinated US citizens to wear masks to stop the rising number of Covid-19 infections in areas with high transmission rate.

This comes after CDC Director Rochelle Walensky announced that, based on new findings, the vaccinated people who get infected with the coronavirus can bear as much viral load as the unvaccinated ones.

"We're seeing now that it's actually possible if you're a rare breakthrough infection that you can transmit further, which is the reason for the change," she said.

Walensky further noted it was very difficult for her to see the mask use rules back, emphasizing that this is the only solution till the amount of virus circulating in the society decreases.

"It is not a welcomed piece of news that masking is going to be a part of people's lives who have already been vaccinated," Walensky said. "This new data weighs heavily on me, this new guidance weighed heavily on me and I just wanted to convey that this was not a decision that was taken lightly."

US daily coronavirus infections rise again after numbers fell in May and June. The seven-day average of new Covid cases in the US was up 53 percent over the previous week.

The sharpest increases in Covid cases are in US states with lower vaccination rates, such as Florida, Texas and Missouri.

In southern US states, fewer than half of residents have received their first dose in some cases.

More than 34 million Americans have been infected with Covid-19 and over 615,000 deaths recorded so far in the US.
