Iran’s COVID vaccinations hit record high of 400k per day

Iran’s health minister says coronavirus vaccinations hit a record high of 400,000 doses a day on Monday.

Iran’s health minister Saeid Namaki says the number of coronavirus vaccinations carried out in the country hit a new high on Monday as the government speeds up its free inoculation program against the disease some six months after the campaign kicked off to a slow start.

Namaki said on Monday that the number of coronavirus vaccine doses given out a day earlier has reached a record high of 400,000.

“A new record was achieved which is a reason to be proud,” said Namaki while in a video conference to inaugurate health projects in several Iranian provinces.

The minister made the remarks as Iran is going through a fifth wave of coronavirus infections with concerns raised about the fast spread of the Delta variant of the virus in the country.

Iran began delivering coronavirus shots in late December right after it took delivery of a first batch of Sputnik V vaccines from Russia.

An infographic published by the official IRNA news agency on Monday showed that nearly 8.5 doses of coronavirus vaccines had been delivered of which more than 3.84 million were jabs provided by companies from China, including the country’s flagship Sinopharm.

The number of vaccinations using Iranian-made Coviran Barekat vaccine had reached over 205,000, showed the report as it indicated that over 2.268 million people had been double-vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The inoculation program is currently reaching to people above 65, an age group which has been responsible for 85% of nearly 8,770 cornavirus deaths reported in Iran since the disease started to circulate in the country in February 2020.

Namaki said all people above 60 will receive vaccines until early August when the current administrative government leaves office.

Health ministry figures published on Tuesday put the daily death toll from the virus at 250 while number of infections had increased by 27,444 since Monday.
