The leading trade union for British doctors is urging the government to think again about removing all Covid-19 related restrictions after July 19.
The British Medical Association (BMA) is calling for the continued use of face masks and new ventilation standards to stave off a potential new wave of the deadly pandemic.
The BMA argues this is “crucial” to protect the National Health Service (NHS), general health and education amid what it says is an “alarming rise in cases”.
According to Dr Chaand Nagpaul, who is BMA council chair, easing restrictions was not an “all or nothing” decision in so far as “sensible, cautious” measures are needed to minimize the impact of “further waves, new variants and lockdowns”.
The BMA’s intervention comes on the heels of the government’s increasing determination to remove all Covid-related restrictions in England on July 19.
The Times (July 03) has reported that a meeting of the Covid Operations Committee will take place on Monday (July 05) at which ministers are expected to approve a plan that will mean fully vaccinated people will be free of all restrictions even if they come into contact with a Covid-infected person.
According to The Times this is the “clearest sign yet” of the government’s plan to replace pandemic restrictions with a focus on “personal responsibility”.
Meanwhile, coronavirus cases are up 74 percent on the previous seven days, according to the latest government figures.
On Friday (July 02), the UK recorded 27,125 new infections with another 27 deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test.
