Covid-19 in Iran

Iran has reported its highest daily deaths from the Covid-19 pandemic since early December last year. According to the health ministry, 258 people have died in the past 24 hours. That brings Iran’s total fatalities from the pandemic to nearly 64,500. The country also registered more than 21,000 daily new infections. Its total case tally is now above two million. On Saturday, a 10-day partial lockdown took effect in 23 out of 31 Iranian provinces, following a jump in daily cases in the past week. Non-essential businesses as well as theatres and sports facilities have been shut. Gatherings are limited to 15 people.

US anti-Iran sanctions

A source close to Iran’s nuclear negotiations says the removal of nuclear-related US sanctions will not be enough. The source says Washington needs to end all anti-Iran measures taken or relabeled by the Trump administration. The source told Press TV that the United States has also to remove the Obama-era sanctions including ISA and Visa Program measures. The source stressed that all those measures have to be removed indefinitely, adding that Iran will not accept any issuance of waivers instead of removing the sanctions regime. The source noted that the verification of US sanctions removal would at least take three to six months. The source said the US representative will have to go back to Washington empty-handed if America does not accept Iran’s conditions. Press TV has conducted an independent investigation by asking Iranian sources about the nuclear talks. Accordingly, the removal of sanctions based on temporary 120-day or 180-day agreements through waivers, cessation, or suspension will not be acceptable to Iran.

Battle for Ma'rib

Reports from Yemen say at least 70 people have been killed in the latest clashes in the strategic city of Ma’rib. Those killed include Saudi-backed militants and forces loyal to the army. The two sides have been fighting for control of the city for weeks now.
