The African Union’s mediator Mohamed el-Hassan Labbat has visited Khartoum to discuss regional issues, the border tension between Sudan and Ethiopia in particular.
Earlier this week, Sudan summoned its ambassador from Ethiopia for consultations amid the tension.
Labbat affirmed the African Union’s keenness on the principle of peaceful African solution to regional challenges.
Sudan and Ethiopia have been locked in a dispute over water and agricultural land in Al-Fashqa as well as the issue of refugees.
Tensions have led to armed clashes between the two sides in recent months. The two countries held talks in January in Khartoum to de-escalate.
Labbat has already led negotiations between the internal Sudanese parties following the overthrow Omar Hassan al-Bashir.
Sudan is currently hosting more than 61,000 Ethiopian refugees in the states of Kassala and Gedarif.
