Deadly attacks prevail in Afghanistan, media staff in crosshairs

Media workers in Afghanistan have been a target in violent attacks recently.

The government believes the Taliban militant group is to blame. The militants deny involvement.

In 2019, seven journalists were killed. Now official figures say at least 14 have lost their lives so far, six of them killed only over the past two months.

The government says it has arrested some individuals involved in some cases.

Some say the main reason that media workers have been in the crosshairs stems from defeats militants have suffered in the battlefields.

Media rights advocates say the government has failed to protect journalists against life threats coming either from terrorist groups, influential figures or local commanders.

To them, the growth of media in Afghanistan is a great achievement.

The advocates want the government to go tough on the perpetrators of assaults on the media staff.
