Former Iranian parliamentarian demoted from his high rank in Oil Ministry

Former Iranian parliament lawmaker Behrouz Ne’mati

A former member of the Iranian parliament has lost his senior position in the Oil Ministry after a probe showed he had been promoted to a very high rank in an unusual manner and only within a week.

The semi-official Fars News agency said in a Tuesday report that Behrouz Ne’mati, a presiding board member of the Iranian parliament until May 2020, was demoted to grade 16 from grade D of the hierarchical system of the Oil Ministry after a probe showed there had been irregularities in how he had gained the position.

The report said Ne’mati, who had only been recruited as a civil servant in the Oil Ministry four years ago, had seen his grade raised by six ranks within six day starting December 11, 2016.

Iran’s General Inspection Office, a subsidiary of Iran’s judiciary branch of government, disqualified Ne’mati from grade D, a position only second to the highest rank in the Ministry.

The decision came after a probe was launched into how Ne’mati, an influential lobbyist in the previous parliament, had managed to progress through the ranks of the civil service. It takes normally four years for an employee of the government in Iran to gain one grade of promotion in the system.

Iran’s Oil Ministry has one of the highest levels of pay for civil servants in Iran as workers in the department are viewed as crucial to the government’s hard currency revenues.

Ne’mati was one of the main supporters of incumbent Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh since he assumed the post in 2013, Fars said.

The former lawmaker lobbied intensively in his final days in the parliament in December last year to prevent an impeachment against Zanganeh.
