US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in Rome after a one-day visit to Greece.
In the Italian capital, Pompeo has held meetings with Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio to discuss among other things Chinese telecom firms such Huawei and ZTE playing a role in the development of Italy’s future 5G network.
Pompeo has reiterated Chinese telecom groups could pose a security risk. However Italy's Huawei President Luigi De Vecchi has denied the company poses a risk, rebutting that Huawei's insides are opened for scrutiny.
US President Donald Trump has campaigned on a hard line towards Beijing in the run-up to a November 3 election. Pompeo was in Rome also to hold talks with Vatican's officials after Pope Francis refused to meet with the US Secretary of State.
The Pontiff's refusal came after Washington criticized the imminent renewal of a two-year-old deal between the Catholic church and Beijing regarding the appointment of Chinese bishops. On October 2, US Secretary Pompeo wraps up his European tour traveling to Croatia.
