Donald Trump is expected to formally accept the Republican nomination for a second term as president in a speech to be delivered from the White House South Lawn.
Delivering his speech, Trump will cap the fourth and final night of the Republican National Convention after greeting supporters at his hotel in Washington earlier in the day.
His address comes as the country is going through a deteriorating pandemic, suffering from a battered economy, witnessing mass protests over racism and getting hit by a massive hurricane.
Trump will also unload on his Democratic rival Joe Biden in his blistering speech, according to two people familiar with the address.
The president is expected to criticize the former vice president on a range of issues from the economy to trade, to Biden’s record on China, immigration, crime, and his response to the coronavirus pandemic.
“At no time before have voters faced a clearer choice between two parties, two visions, two philosophies, or two agendas," Trump is expected to say.
“We have spent the last four years reversing the damage Joe Biden inflicted over the last 47 years. At the Democrat convention, you barely heard a word about their agenda. But that's not because they don't have one. It's because their agenda is the most extreme set of proposals ever put forward by a major party nominee."
Meanwhile, Biden spokesperson Andrew Bates, reacted to the excerpts of Trump's speech, slating him for his poor response to the coronavirus pandemic.
"As the worst public health crisis in 100 years spread like wildfire, he disregarded warnings from his own experts and cited Chinese government propaganda to justify his inaction. Even after his botched response has cost over 180,000 Americans their lives, he still has no plan to overcome the coronavirus and he has doubled down on trying to take healthcare coverage away from tens of millions of people."
He also attacked the president for his response to mostly peaceful protests against racism and police shootings of African Americans.
"He is the only American president to have ever tear gassed peaceful protesters for a photo op. And his advisers are explicitly celebrating violence occurring on his watch. So yes, there never has been a clearer choice."
Meanwhile, demonstrators rallied to protest Trump's acceptance of the GOP nomination at Black Lives Matter plaza across from the White House in Washington.
Trump has, in recent weeks, attacked demonstrators who took to the streets to protest police brutality against Black people.
Fresh protests erupted for justice in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Sunday night after police shot Jacob Blake, an unarmed black man.
On Wednesday, Trump announced the deployment of more federal agents and the National Guard to Wisconsin “to restore LAW and ORDER!"”
Democrats, however, have described Trump’s focus on “law and order” as an attempt to distract from his slow response to the pandemic.
