Tokyo 2020 organizers have received the Olympic flame in a scaled-down handover ceremony in the Greek capital amid the coronavirus pandemic that has cast doubt on the global event.

In a brief ceremony closed to spectators in Athens, Greece's Olympics Committee Chief Spyros Capralos handed over the lit torch to the Japanese former Olympics swimmer and Tokyo games representative, Naoko Imoto.

Only a few officials were allowed into the central Athens stadium, as the country has imposed strict measures to contain the spread of the virus.

The flame will arrive in Japan on Friday, with a domestic relay on March the 26th.

Despite raising concerns, the IOC and the Japanese government have insisted that the games will go ahead as scheduled.
