The International Criminal Court has decided to launch an investigation into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Afghanistan.
The investigation will look at actions by US, Afghan and Taliban troops. The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, was quick to denounce the decision calling it 'reckless'. Pompeo also described the move as 'a truly breathtaking action by an unaccountable political institution masquerading as a legal body.'
The ICC also approved that the scope of the investigation should include CIA black sites operated in Poland, Lithuania, and Romania, where detainees were taken. Why is the US so concerned about the ICCs ruling? The US previously imposed visa restrictions on ICC officials. What actions would the US take in response to the latest ICC move?
