Lionel Messi's hat-trick has sent Barcelona to the top of the Spanish La Liga after hammering Mallorca 5-2 at Camp Nou.

The defending champions took an early lead after Antoine Griezmann ended his run from the halfway line by clipping the ball over the keeper five minutes into the match.

The 2019 Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi then scored with a spectacular curling effort from 25 yards.

But Mallorca striker Budimir cut the deficit for Mallorca in the 35th minute. However, Messi scored a similar goal to his first to make it 3-1 and Luis Suárez backheeled the ball to widen the gap to 4-1, all within the first half.

Budimir scored his second with a header in the 34th minute for Mallorca. But Messi was at it again to complete his hat-trick with seven minutes remaining, as Barca shot back to the top of La Liga, above Real Madrid.
