Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani is at the UN General Assembly in New York after a year of manoeuvring the severest US sanctions imposed on Iran since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. He has met with French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and German Chancellor Angela Merkel who are all pushing for a meeting between Rouhani and US President Donald Trump.
Iran says talks can only happen if the US ditches the bully tactics and lifts the sanctions. Since withdrawing from the historic Iran Nuclear deal in 2018 the Trump administration has reinstated old sanctions and imposed new ones, threatening the whole world against trading with oil and gas rich Iran. And US President Donald Trump knows it’s the Iranian people that bear the brunt of these sanctions.
Trump’s tactics show he isn’t aware of Iran’s aversion to hegemonic powers throwing their weight around. By imposing the most crippling sanctions of all time on Iran, his administration has literally played all its cards.
Meanwhile Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu to solidify their alliance and reaffirmed their commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria.
