During the ceremony in Monaco, Liverpool's 28-year-old Dutch Champions League-winning defender was named UEFA's Men's Player of the Year.
Virgil Van Dijk has now become the first ever defender to win the award, beating football icons Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus and Barcelona's Lionel Messi, who have won the award five times between them. The Dutchman also won the Defender of the Season Award for the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League Campaign.
The Netherlands’ center back has transformed Liverpool's defense since joining them from Southampton in January 2018, for a then world record fee of 75 million Pounds. Liverpool conceded just 20 goals in the Premier League last year, while keeping 20 clean sheets.
