Japan removes South Korea from trade 'whitelist'

Japan’s cabinet voted to remove South Korea from its 'whitelist' of preferred trading partners, accusing Seoul of failing to adequately protect dual use materials, while alluding to other influences.

Seoul claims that Tokyo’s move responds to recent court decisions awarding damages to South Korean forced laborers of colonial Japanese corporations. Civil leaders calling for a boycott of Japanese goods and visits rallied outside the Japanese embassy Friday. South Korean President Moon Jae-in addressed the nation in a live televised broadcast.

The South Korean president called for Japan to reverse policy and for talks, also threatening to place restrictions on trade with Japan, and withdraw from an intelligence sharing agreement.

Ordinary South Koreans are left wondering how long the trade war will last.
