Richard Carapaz is on the brink of winning the Giro d'Italia, after holding on to the overall leader's pink jersey in the penultimate stage.

The Ecuadorian comfortably held-off 2-time champion Vincenzo Nibali in the 194 kilometer trek, as Spaniard Pello Bilbao sprinted to victory in the 20th stage.

Carapaz now has one hand on the trophy, leading Nibali of Italy by 1 minute and 54 seconds in the overall standings, with Mikel Landa 2 minutes and 53 seconds adrift.

The 3-week race finishes on Sunday with a time-trial in Verona.
