British Prime Minister Theresa May has vowed she would go on with her task of finalizing a draft deal on her country’s withdrawal from the European Union despite challenges to her leadership within the ruling Conservative Party.

The embattled prime minister warned Sunday that a leadership change wouldn't make Brexit negotiations easier.

“These next seven days are going to be critical, they are about the future of this country ... I am not going to be distracted from the important job,” May told Sky News, referring to the  time remaining until an EU summit would decide about approving the Brexit agreement.

At least 20 Conservative Party lawmakers have submitted letters of no-confidence in May to the chairman of a party committee tasked with supervising its leadership.

Media reports suggest others have sent such letters confidentially, meaning that a threshold of 48 letters needed for triggering the confidence vote would be reached in the coming days.

May said, however, that toppling her would not change the Brexit deal, warning that the move could even make the situation worse.

“A change of leadership at this point isn’t going to make the negotiations any easier ... what it will do is mean that there is a risk that actually we delay the negotiations and that is a risk that Brexit gets delayed or frustrated,” she told the Sky News.

Pro- and anti-Brexit lawmakers both in the Conservative Party and in the opposition Labour Party have said that they would reject the deal once it comes to the parliament for final approval. May has defended the agreement, saying it is the best solution possible and will deliver a 2016 referendum in which Britons narrowly voted to leave the bloc after more than 40 years.
