EU complicit in creating refugee crisis: Commentator

A commentator believes the European Union is “complicit” in creating the ongoing refugee crisis due to participating in US wars in the Middle East and North Africa.

“Well, the background to this is that the EU is complicit in creating this problem. NATO countries have participated in US wars in the region that is what has created the immigration, refugee crisis that you see now. Why are these people fleeing their country? Because of their desperate straits. They are fleeing war-torn destroyed nations, they are fleeing in fear,” John Steppling told Press TV in an interview on Sunday.

The comments came after Malta and Italy refused to allow a rescue ship carrying more than 300 refugees who were stranded in the Mediterranean Sea to dock at their ports.

Europe has been hit since 2014 by an unprecedented influx of refugees fleeing conflict-ridden zones in North Africa and the Middle East, mainly Syria.
