The UK is contributing to the Israeli-led plans for destabilization and the ultimate destruction of the Middle East, says a British scholar, warning that London could be looking at a grim future if it fails to change its foreign policy.
“The United Kingdom is involved in the destabilization of the Middle East. It does this by supporting the American policy and the Israeli policy which is to enable Israel expand into the lands of others,” Dr. Rodney Shakespeare, a university professor in London, told Press TV on Sunday.
Britain has sold record amounts of weapons to Israel over the past year, new data shows, prompting backlash from human rights groups amid the Tel Aviv regime’s ongoing crackdown of Palestinian protesters.
Last year the government of Prime Minister Theresa May granted £221 million worth of arms licenses to military contractors exporting to Israel, the Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) revealed Saturday.
That is almost 3 the previous year’s figure of £86 million and a significant increase from the £20 million in arms licenses in 2015.
“This is not just about selling arms, this is about the deliberate destruction of the Middle East,” added the academic, referring to London’s foreign policy regarding Palestine and Yemen.
The government of the Prime Minister Theresa May has done little to stop Israel’s use of lethal force against Palestinian protesters over on the Gaza border over the past few weeks. The violence has seen Israeli military forces kill dozens of unarmed Palestinians and injure hundreds more.
The UK has also ignored international calls to halt its weapons sales to Saudi Arabia over the course of its deadly war against Yemen, which began in 2015 and has put the poverty-stricken country on the verge of a humanitarian disaster.
“The British royal family and the British government is complicit because the Western foreign policy, particularly that of American and the UK is controlled by Israel,” Shakespeare said. “It is a Zionist foreign policy.”
The foreign policy, he argued, only envisions a world that is ruled by an Israeli-controlled Washington with the UK riding along.
London views arms deals with Israel and Middle Eastern countries as one of the main pillars of its economy after it quits the European Union (EU) in 2019.
That’s probably the reason why Prince Williams is slated to tour Israel and the region next month. Human rights groups have criticized the trip.
“I think it’s a disgrace that a member of the royal family should be crawling to Israel as they crawl to the other members of the Axis of Evil” like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, Shakespeare said.
The analyst said the UK had to free itself from Israel and the US before being caught in a “huge disaster.”
That would require a new foreign policy that ends arms sales to Saudi Arabia and Israel as a first step, the analyst concluded.
