Video shows extrajudicial killing of young Palestinian by Israeli snipers

Newly released footage aired by some Palestinian and Israeli media appears to show the moment a young Palestinian protester was shot dead by Israeli snipers during bloody protests in which 16 Palestinian were killed by Israeli troops, the deadliest in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the 2014 Gaza War.

The video, which was posted by the Times of Israel and some Palestinian media on Saturday, purportedly showed teenage Abdel Fattah Abdel Nabi, while carrying a large tire, running with two other demonstrators to join the main body of protesters in the border areas of the besieged enclave a day earlier, when he was shot and fell to the ground.

The teenage boy lost his life on the spot, Palestinians on the scene said. According to figures provided by Gaza's Health Ministry, 17 Palestinians, including Abdel Nabi, were killed and over 1,400 others wounded on Friday after Israeli forces fired live ammunition at Palestinian protesters marking Land Day and used tear gas to push them back from a heavily fortified border fence.

Ahead of the protest, the Israeli military had deployed tanks and 100 snipers with the authority to use live rounds on the Gaza border.

Multiple Muslim nations around the world voiced their outrage over the Israeli military’s response to the mass demonstration in Gaza.

General strike over the killings

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has declared Saturday a national day of mourning and urged a general strike in honor of the victims. He also said that Israel was “fully responsible” for the tragic killings of peaceful Palestinian protesters. The strike, which affects universities, schools, government organizations, was called for in the occupied West Bank in solidarity with Gaza.

Meanwhile, in the southern Gaza Strip, residents said Israeli troops fired warning shots toward a crowd of youths, some of whom burned tires. Health officials said at least 13 people sustained injuries in the process.

Massive funeral for Palestinian protester

Additionally on Saturday, thousands of Palestinians in the northern part of Gaza attended the funeral of Hamdan Ismail Abu Amsha, who was shot dead by Israeli soldiers on Friday, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health.

The funeral commenced at the deceased’s home in Beit Hanun and ended in the town’s main cemetery. Mourners shouted anti-Israel and Anti-US slogans as they carried Abu Amsha’s body toward the graveyard. Among other mourners, fighters of the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades attended the procession.

The funeral came a day after a similar massive procession was held in the same town for another Palestinian victim, identified as Sari Walid Abu Odeh.

Human right groups slam the massacre

Multiple human rights organizations have come out in full condemnation of Israel’s violent raid on the massive unarmed civilian protests in the besieged sliver.

Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights, among others, released a statement on Friday, denouncing Israel’s use of military snipers against the civilian demonstrators.

“The Israeli military’s use of 100 snipers against unarmed Palestinian civilian protesters in the Gaza Strip is illegal,” it said, demanding “that those found responsible for the killings be brought to justice.”

The Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli siege since June 2007. The blockade has caused a decline in living standards as well as unprecedented unemployment and poverty.

Tel Aviv has waged three wars on the coastal enclave since 2008, including the 2014 offensive, which left more than 2,200 Palestinians dead.
