Consequences expected as Trump sacks Tillerson

It was a decision that caught many off guard: US president Donald Trump has fired his secretary of State Rex Tillerson. The public row between the two went public after it was leaked last year that Tillerson had called Trump a moron. Tillerson will be replaced by CIA director Mike Pompeo. It was already known that Trump and Tillerson had differences over a wide range of issue. The 14-month tenure of Tillerson was a rocky period for the former US top diplomat. Tillerson and Trump differed on many issues. North Korea, Iran nuclear deal, the Persian Gulf row and the US approach toward its European allies.

Syrian army’s success in East Ghouta raises alarms in Washington

The United States has proposed a new resolution imposing an immediate ceasefire in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta. The US Ambassador to the UN has warned that if the UN Security Council fails to agree, Washington is prepared to act unilaterally. Nikki Haley said on Monday, “It is not the path we prefer, but it is a path we have demonstrated we will take, and we are prepared to take again.”In recent weeks, the Syrian army has been engaged in a military operation to liberate Eastern Ghouta from a host of militant groups, including the al-Nusra Front. As the Syrians along with their allies are succeeding on the ground, the Americans are trying to stop them by hook or by crook.
